Choosing a Major

One of the most common concerns we get from high school students is “I don’t know what I want to study in college”. With over 600 different majors out there, it can be tough to identify the major for you. More than 50% of incoming college freshman are undecided or undeclared, so don’t stress if you aren’t ready to commit to a course of study just yet. In the mean time, there are some things you can do to help find the major that is right for you.

First, make a list of your favorite high school classes. Include courses you enjoyed or excelled in. Identify courses that were your least favorite, it is just as important to rule out subjects you have no real interest in.

Second, consider your personality. Are you an outgoing free spirit, or are you introverted and very structured. Your personality is very important and comes in to play when considering interest areas and potential majors.

Third, take a career assessment questionnaire. These assessments don’t predict the future, but they can be a great way to get you moving in the right direction. Kuder and Bridges have free online questionnaires you can complete through NHHEAF! For login information, call us at the Center for College Planning, 888-7GRADUATE x119.

Lastly, gather as much information as possible. When you find a subject area you are interested in, do some research. Read up on it, talk to people in those professions, don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Researching different majors can be a very exciting time for incoming freshman. For those of you who have already made your choice, what methods did you use to help finalize your decision?

Don't Panic,
Tom
